Last weekend I was lucky enough to be in the Caribbean to compete in the St Croix 70.3. The first thing that springs to most peoples minds when talking about this race is conquering The Beast, a 700m climb with an average gradient of 14% and a max of 21%. Nasty!! For me the climb was probably the highlight of my day … I felt much stronger than I ever have on this climb and it probably helped being a little lighter too!!!
On race day I swam, biked and ran my way to a disappointing 9th place but I did however learn 3 important lessons:
1. Deep section race wheels in a strong cross wind scare the life out of me (even when I am in the Caribbean).
2. You should always be your harshest critic but also your most loyal supporter.
3. The only beast I truly need to conquer is the one inside my head.
