My Civic Duty

I really hate to blog and move Scotty’s (aka Robin’s) blog down a notch, but…

So, what does a professional triathlete do on the Monday before Wildflower Triathlon?

Well, today was a little different for me.  Instead of waking up, training, doing some email, training, etc, I had to go to court today.  I did wake up to do my bike and run, but only the bike got done as I had a flat and had to get downtown by 9am.  I was commuting by bike so I didn’t have to worry about parking, etc…and it is probably faster to ride a bike than drive a car during rush hour in Austin!

Seems while in Krabi, the good folks from Travis County decided to send me a jury summons.  Rather than just ignore it and risk a hearty fine…I did the “right” thing and filled out the required info.  And lucky for me, I had to show up in court today.

Basically, it means that you and about 19 other folks have to go downtown to the courthouse, sit for awile, wait some more, and then go sit while a lawyer gives you the basics of the case and asks nearly every single possible juror in the room questions.  The annoying part is that the lawyer tries to make friends with everyone in the courtroom as well.

The basics.  The case has been going since January 1, 2007.  Yep, 3.5 years.  The amount in question is about $2,000.  I am guessing that at the end of the day, whomever wins might see half of that since both had lawyers?!

Anyway, not how I planned on spending about 2-3 hours of my morning today.  Needless to say, this is the 3rd time that I have been called…luckily this time I did not have to sit an hear the case.  But at least they do offer “juror pay” if you consider $6/day pay.  In Krabi it would buy a really nice lunch…in Austin it will get you about 1/2 a lunch.
