My girlfriend is Anemic :(

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

So, this was the topic of one of our convertations last weekend!

She went with some of her teamates to the doctor to get evaluated and she was 2 points under par.

So, before she changed her diet or got some local suplements. I rationalised that it was not the food she was eating or the amount or lack of suplements. But rather, the preparation of her meals DESTROY a significant portion of the nutrition.

You all know what Im talking about: Cutting into small pieces/broilling/microwave/deep fry/boilling/steaming/freazing/baking/ect.

In this impatient era, humans are cutting corners to get the food from the base, to their salavia lubed yaps ;)

I used to work in a restaurant, more specificaly in a Pizza Place. And yes, its all about fast delivery from the time the order is in. I learned tones. Like if you cut the spinage to agressivly, it will bruise and withing minutes “blead” its nutriments to the bottom of the container its shortly being contained in, before passing to the 450 degree over.

Another nasty thing, is that many of the means we would get, are pre-cooked at the factory, cooked again when it arrives to our shop and the is cooked for a THIRD time before its delivered to the customer! And I did not mentioned the 2 times its keeped in minus 10 degree celsius freezers!

Same thing goes with seeds and nuts. Their health is hindered when heated to high or too long! Which is one reason why lots of breads, have the seeds on the ouside of the bread, because they where put there immediatly after is was baked!

So babe, dont change your diet or smallow some pills. Just be more concious of where and what you eat… Because in this impatients and “salmonellaphobic” era, the nutrional value of your foods, are compromisedm, by ourselfs.

DONT get me started on dairy products ;)

PS: I cannot prove any of the above staments nor have any education in food or naturopathy.

IM Malaysia Round 2.

Can anybody believe I’ve done twice as more Ironmans than Olympic distances triathlons? Yes I have! LAst saturday was my 4th career Ironman, heres how it went down!

After a very casual preperation, travel and media conference race morning arrived and once the gun went off, I un-charastericly left my ego in my wim trunks and swam at the very back of the lead swim group.

After a speedy T1, in fact, the fastest of the day, look up the results :) I was on the bike just behind 2 time Ironman Malaysia champion Bryan Rhodes! Who also rides a Cervelo P3, after 200m one of his bottles poped out and I had to swerve to avoid it. But after a few kilometers it was clear that I was not strong enuff to stay with the lead athletes.

This was the hardest part of the race for me, mentaly…

Sometime later, maybe 1 hour later I was caught by a medium size and medium speed riding group of which I stayed behind! There was a few good runners in this group so I check in with my patients, got some calories down and made sure I keeped out of drafting distance. And funny enuff, many of these athltes where ridding Cervelo P3`s!

Once in T2, I slaped on my Avia bolts and waited around for Petr V because hes the one I decided to run with! We ran shoulder to shoulder for about 15km, climbed into 4th place but then I started to faid and tighten up…I still pushed myself to run as fast as I could on this day and then walked the aid staitons so I can get some calories inside.

I crossed the finish lin 8 minutes than I did last year!

The last few days, I have been using the excusse that I started the run to fast, then blew up. But thats not 100% true, the more I think about it, I did not get proper nutrition in the opening aid stations because I had the insistences on running with Petr V. He showed his experience by being in and out of those staitions very quickly, on the bike as well!

The way we do our track sessions, it promotes us running fast, then slowing down, then running fast again, basicaly running fartlek on the track, of which makes sense to do on the run of an Ironman!

You race you learn.

I would like to thanx all the gang from The Bike Boutique, who did the bike check at the race and gave me special treatment and extra attention :) and to th race organisers, who provided so much to me, a developping pro athlete with airport pick ups, lots of free meals a huge towel and 2 t-shirts :)

I hope that it was a joke that IM Malaysia was in its final year…I will do my best to go to the Putra Jaya 70.3 because I know I will get the same great hospitality I`ve had in my past 2 years of racing in Langkawi!
