5i50 Subic Bay Race Report.

Hey readers!

The 2 weeks leading into this race things where pretty hectic.
As I had to do a whole lot of things.
A lot of which, was for other people!
And of course, I always put my needs last.
Which meant quite a lot of stress and not much rest!

2 days before the race – my race started.
I had to fetch 3 of my scholars from the airport in crazy Manila.
After that, we had to go to Primo Cycle to pick up/fit Cervelo bikes!

Meet up with another one of my scholars.
Then off to Subic Bay
For the inaugural 5i50 Philippines!

We arrived well passed mid-night.
And our travel time was well – longer than a flight to Japan!

Pre-race day is when the fun stuff started!
There was a BRILLIANT race expo organized by TBB Holding.

Here are some of our scholars, me, Alex and Sir Fred!

All of Subic got behind this event!

Pro Q and A.

Race morning came pretty quick.
My 3 scholars doing the individual race.
Where in fact doing their first Olympic distance.
And of one of them, Dhill was doing his first triathlon!

Needless to say, I spent a lot of time explaining the basics.
And making sure all was fine with their race.
Before I started to think of myself!

Thats right – a free Jeepney ride to the swim start!
Now thats sports tourism for you =)

Honestly, I had a bad swim.
I struggle with power in the first few 100m’s lost the leaders.
Stayed positive and keep to turn over my arms.
1000m’s later I caught up to the leader and drafted.

Once on dry land.
I ripped trough transition and was 2nd on my bike.
But all of a sudden I keep being told to stop.
What? Stop? I am busy racing man!!
As I was running with my bike and getting ready to get on.

Turns out, Csaba Kuttor accidentally threw speed suite on my back wheel. It got caught on my quick release. After a few seconds lots, I was on my bike and had my head down and A$$ up trying to catch up to the lead trio up the road.

After a few k’s of powering and as we entered the Subic Bay International Airport as the course went literally on the runway!

It was flat and FAST!
After that – into the Subic Bay forest for some hills!
I hung off the back and felt pretty good.
Must have been all the long hard hours on the trainer!

This was what we had to throw out bottles in!
Pretty cool – there should be time bonuses if you can it in!

Once on the run – it was every man for themselves.
The 3 other guys took off in a hurry.
And my goal was to avoid melting in the heat…

The run with into a golf course.
Which was SUPER humid.
It was like the heat came from the ground.

With about 2k to go – I caught sight of 3rd place.
I put in a few surges and try and close the gap.
But I ran out of room.
And started to really struggle in the last 400m.

I crossed the line happy with my race!
Results can be found —-> HERE <—-
Only got beat my an IM champ, 3 time Olympian and multiple X-Terra champ!

Some beers and cold tub after the race?

My scholars after the race.

On the stage before the Alaska Milk storm!

The Alaska Milk storm has started!

In the middle of the Alaska Milk storm!

Anyway this blog is getting long.

I would like to point out:
3 of the top 4 males where wearing ON running shoes!

That all my scholars made the podium in their respective categories.
And where the top 3 Philippino’s out of the water (including relay).
Minutes ahead of the nearest Philippino Elites!

In fact – in the top 21 athletes across the line.
13 are Philippino’s and 8 of them trained with or where developed at one point or another by TeamTBB.

As well to the first Pinoy across the line was ridding the Specilized Tarmac that was donated by Nicola Spirig almost 4 years ago!

It simply shows the vivid impact we have had in Philippines triathlon. As cliché as this might sound – our best is yet to come – you have my word.

Anyway, I would like to give a big thank to everybody involved in this race! I have done over 30 triathlons in the Philippines – this was the best for sure! It had everything a triathlon would want and a great place to bring the family or that special someone!

I will be looking forward to this event next year.
And strongly suggest thats its worth to fly to this race from overseas!
You will get your money’s worth and then some.
Its a guarantee!
