Challenge Wanaka New Zealand

Monday, January 18th, 2010

Wanaka was a happening place on Saturday where the 4th Challenge Wanaka to be held took place.
Wanake is absolutely beautiful, i would almost move here! The town is gorgeous with little cafe’s and nice restuarants and awesome coffee shops!..BUT its the scenery that is mind blowing, its situated on Lake Wanaka which is so clean you can see the bottom. You can fish, paddle , water ski, jetski, camp etc etc you name it.. you can do it.
The country side is spectacular with picturesque mountains and even snow capped ones, streams running down the mountains and rivers running alongside make popular camping spots!Accomodation here is fabulous, Wyndham Resort is lovely with outdoor spa etc and The Mercure is superb also with several outdoor heated spas and even a lap pool!
RACE DAY :
The day was prefect sunny and upto 29 degrees, which was nice when you exit a 14 degree chilly water of Lake Wanake!
The town welcomed a half Ironman alongside the full distance!
This race is a must do on the tri calander, for any of you that have never visited Wanaka I guarantee you will LOVE this little town of around 6000 people.
The people of Wanaka are amazing, friendly and just love having the race here! They welcome the athletes, families and spectators with open arms, and really get behind the event with enthusiasmone and Mount Aspirin!! I have never seen anything like it!
The race takes us on the bike out to the famous Treble Cone and turning before Mount Aspiring, before heading out to Cromwell. We crossed some sightseeing bridges heading along side the lake up to Hawea and back into Wanaka.
The run was awesome mostly trails and off road alonside a crystal clear river which I was told has something like 1400 trout /fish per km …amazing!!
The finishline was electric and almost comparitive to Roth, which is hard to beat !The streets were lined 3/4 deep with people as the cheered athletes from 3pm til midnight!
Oh and my race well I had an average day, solid but a bit under par.I have now done One LD one Full and 3 halfs since Hawaii very good prep for a grea 2010 end of season…thats the plan!
Swim : 13.9 degrees freezing and a little slow but second female out of water 3 min off leader.
Bike : Average I minute slower than 1 st female and very windy and warmish
Run : Solid but nothing fancy, managed to gain 3 minutes 30 but not enough to win!
Result : 2nd Place 930min 1 min 40 sec behind first place Gina Fergusson!Lilly went solid and finished 3rd, while Keegan i thought had a great day and fnished solid in 3rd behind Ussher who won.

Port Half..One of the best and most scenic races

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

Well i didnt win but I gave a good crack ….well that was after a horriffic swim by most of us pro women who had no idea where we were going! My swim took the cake though, and was probably worse than anyone’s!I failed to navigate straight lines dodging boats and other things like buoy ropes which got entagled around my neck!!!Other than that my day was ok…(apart from my seat post slipping down at 30km) but definately not my best!A solid run saw me run into 3rd thankgod! The top women 1st place Sam Warriner, 2nd Caroline Steffan and myself were all within 2 minutes to make it a very close race!
If your thinking of racing early in the season next year be sure NOT to miss this one!
The organisrs do an amazing job, the course is very scenic with the run around the amazing Mount ..(i think that is why i lost time in the run in that part…. i was ditracted by the beautiful coastal views!!) The town is vibrant and comes alive race day with huge crowds and commentry most of the way, and the people there all seem to be so friendly.
I also enjoyed my stay at the lovely Atlas apartments and would definatly recommend this to anyone who like a little luxury!
Off to Wanake to try and hit another podium…wish me luck…no tell me to HTFU!! THANKS!!
