Copenhagen Denmark the beatiful Danish city played host to its second Iron Distance event to be held in the middle of its amazing city!
This is the only full distance race to be held in a city, and they sure know how to host an evcent like the Challenge!
Race day was cooler conditions with 17 degree water temperatere in the swim, quite a bit of wind to fight on the bike, then a crowd over 150000 on the run to bring us home!
My swim despite having a shocking start,( both jodie and i seemed to have picked the wrong side) was one of my best(thanks to me lovong my 2xu suit) and saw me exit in over 49 minutes around two mins down from my very good mate and Teamtbb swim star Swallow.
I built the bike and by around 40 km managed to take the lead, but was quickly overtaken again as Jodes smashed up the bike course from then on.The whole bike we managed to put over 15 minutes into the rest of the field, she lead the whole way riding amazingly strong. I paced myself and prepared for a good run.
Off the bike into T2 in 4hrs 54 min and the other girls were” no where to be seen ” I ran out solid and tried to maintain pace through out the 42.4km (it was 200 mtres long).Each4 laps of the run I was able to hold quite similar splits, and didnt fade like I usually do with 8 or so km to go.
Unfortunately Jodes had to pull out, again a sore foot, which was disappointing as I know she would have been in contention.
I felt extremely strong on the run, it was crazy to keep pushing when I heard I had 30 min lead.I certainly didnt take the pressure of the pedal though ,wanting a solid run split, like I have been renowned for was my goal.Doc said before the race” the run will be there” , so the whole runI kept reminding myself of my lovely 30km and up the hill runs ,and knew I had done the work!
I backed off to enjoy a huge screaming crowd with about 2 km to go ad soaked up the Danish atmosphere ,one of the biggest crwods I have ever seen!
I broke the tapae in 8hrs52 minutes a new recordand ,a 3:05 run split and around 40 minutes infront of the 2nd placed girl.
It was great to take a second win here and my 6th Iron distance title, along side fellow Albury boy and friend Timmy Berkel.
Thanks to Jodie for being so amazing and bringing me a Frappe my favorite after the race, and for the smoking pace on the bike.
I also want to mention Stephen Bayliss for his gutsy finish, he was certainly in the mix and could have won the race, with his 3rd position off the bike.He suffered bad stomach issues as did many, and wasnt able to run like he would have!
Thanks to Copenhagen and the amazing Challenge family for hosting the race and putting on yet another superb event as always!!!
USA is my next event REV3 Cedar Point, then finally I get to go home and see my partner and enjoy everything I have missed at home in the last 3 months!
