Abu Dhabi International – I love my job

Sunday, March 20th, 2011

UNEXPECTED “30sek to go” the speaker said. I made myself some space between the girls at the start line. I’m fully focused, buried my toes in to the sand, goggles positioned properly in the face, last deep breath – I’m ready. “And here we have a very famous person who is responsible for the start signal today – Ian Thorpe”.  WHAAAAAAT??? Ian Thorpe is here, at the beach just some meters away where I’m staying and nobody was telling me? WHAAAAAT??? I removed my goggle took a step backwards, stood on my tiptoes in hope to catch a glimpse. I felt like watching Doktor Schiwago over 3h and then finally someone is telling, Omar Sharif is just sitting next to me.  …I couldn’t see him, “10sek to go”. Oh, what a pity…

THE RACE It was a huge day in the office. I’m fine and happy with the race because I know I did my best. I never felt exellent or smashed over all day. It was a great performance on a average day with some incredibly tough conditions on the bike and run course. I’m just saying, wind, sandstorm and heat. But I love it – some sand in my face, sticky gel all over my hands,  p** all over my bike and eating molted marsbars in 38dec. I love my job :-)

THANK YOU to the organizers who made Abu Dhabi International to a unique raceday. Justin for all your help, my Coach Brett for torment me the weeks before, Team TBB for all your support and my sponsors for believing in- and supporting our sport.
