It is a great race with a great history. The course here is perfect for an ironman with the 1 lap of the island bike ride particularly impressive and challenging. I think the view as you climp up to Mirador del Rio has to be one of the best views you get in and triathlon. It really is spectacular.
My race went well, Dan lead the swim the whole way, with Philip Graves then myself behind him, he put in a strong surge coming into lap 2 of the swim and I think we lost a few from behind us.
Onto the bike and Philip was very strong and gradually rode further away from us both.
Eventual winner Victor Del Corral caught us both at 120km and was riding strongly and pulled away. I finished the bike in 3rd position with a very large gap to Philip and a smaller gap to Victor and then many athletes not too far behind also.
But I tried to push the run as hard as I could. Philip puled out around half distance, so I was in 2nd but Victor was running well and I never got close, but I managed to have a comfortable gap to 3rd place behind me.
I was pleased to finish in 2nd position in this presigious Ironman race here in Lanzarote.
I was extra happy to see Bella doing so well in her first Ironman after giving birth to baby Charlie:) I am very proud of her!
So we leave the Canari Island now and head back to Switzerland to meet up with the rest of the team and the boss, can’t wait:)
